When it comes to sauna placement, you’ll typically see them in one of three spots: by the water for a refreshing cold plunge, nestled in the trees for privacy, or near the house for convenience. No matter where you’re thinking of putting one, all that’s required is a clear, level area for the setup. With a steel roof that handles heavy snow and a painted board and batten exterior that can take the harsh freeze-thaw cycles, it stands strong through the cold. The wood-fired stove heats the cedar hot room quickly, even in sub-zero temperatures. There’s no need for winterizing or covering it up; it’s ready to go all season long. In fact, the chillier it gets outside, the more enjoyable the sauna experience becomes.
Foundation Prep for an Outdoor Sauna
Your sauna needs a solid, level base to keep it off the ground, and should be ready before delivery day. There are a few good options for a foundation: a compacted gravel pad, concrete pavers, or a poured slab. Gravel is often the go-to choice because it drains well and is usually the cheapest. Pavers work well for smaller saunas and flatter areas, while a concrete slab is great if you want something more permanent or if you’re already working on a patio or cold plunge nearby. No matter which option you pick, there are two key things to keep in mind: the base has to be level, and it should allow water to drain away, not pool underneath. If moisture sits under the sauna, it can really shorten its lifespan. Make sure the pad is slightly larger than the sauna’s footprint to ensure that any runoff stays clear of the edges, and have the ground slope away from it. You’ll also need to make sure there’s clear access for delivery, as it comes in on a flatbed truck with a skid steer or crane. Just having a path wide enough for the equipment and ensuring there aren’t any low branches or overhead lines above where it will be dropped should do the trick. Choose Wood-Fired or Electric Stove
You can choose either wood fired or an electric stove with your sauna build. A wood-fired stove is the traditional Finnish setup and has the advantage of not requiring any wiring, making it perfect for lakeside lots, cabins, or other outdoor areas. It generally takes about 30 to 45 minutes to heat up. An electric stove is convenient, since it heats with just a switch and maintains a consistent temperature, which is great for shorter sauna sessions and more frequent use. However, it does need a dedicated electric circuit installed by an electrician, so where you decide to place it is important.

What's the difference between an electric and a wood-fired sauna?
An electric sauna heats up at the flip of a switch, but it requires a dedicated electrical hookup installed by an electrician. You can use your own electrician or we can help you find one. A wood fired sauna offers the traditional Finnish experience: no wiring needed, with a deeper, softer heat that’s part of the charm.
What maintenance does the sauna require?
Not much! Just remember to air it out after each use, sweep the floor, and occasionally wipe down the benches. You’ll want to empty the stove’s ash box when it gets full and have the chimney cleaned about once a year, similar to a wood stove. The cedar interior doesn’t need any treatment, and the exterior can withstand the seasons without needing special winter preparation.
How long does it take to heat up?
Once the fire is going, you can expect the sauna to reach a comfortable temperature within about 30 to 45 minutes. This timing may vary based on the outside temperature and your personal preference for heat. Lighting the stove and letting it warm up while you prepare is part of the whole sauna ritual
Can I pour water on the stove?
Absolutely, and you definitely should! Pouring water over the hot stones creates löyly, which is the beautiful burst of steam that defines the Finnish sauna experience. That’s exactly what the stove and stones are made for.
