A Step-by-Step guide to Backyard Wellness, Delivery Logistics, and Heat Quality
For a first-timer renting a mobile sauna, the idea of having a 3,000lb sauna delivered to their driveway can be as intimidating as it is exciting. The process shouldn't feel like a math test; it should be the start of a deep, detoxifying retreat right outside your door.
Whether you are looking to master the "Nordic Cycle" with a cold plunge or simply want to enjoy the crisp heat of a wood-fired stove, a little bit of preparation ensures your experience is seamless and stress-free. From understanding the "Three Ls" of site placement to mastering the art of löyly (steam), this guide covers everything you need to know to ensure your first rental is a success.
We take the logistics and hygiene seriously so you can focus entirely on the relaxation. Here is exactly what to expect from the moment you book until the final embers cool when you rent a mobile sauna.
Phase 1: The Reservation – No Surprises, Just Steam
Renting a mobile sauna shouldn't feel like a math test. When you're ready to bring the heat to your home, the first step is understanding the "all-in" value versus the logistical variables. Here is how we handle the booking process to ensure transparency from the start.
Securing Your Dates
Our mobile units are in high demand, especially during peak wellness seasons. To make things official:
- The Booking: Book online or give us call/text to confirm dates and rates.
- The Deposit: To complete your reservation and lock in your dates, we require a deposit at the time of booking.
- The Confirmation: Once your deposit is received, we officially add you to our schedule. You’ll receive an immediate confirmation email with your rental details, which serves as your receipt and peace of mind that the heat is on its way.
Understanding the "All-In" Value
We believe that when you are renting a mobile sauna your focus should be on relaxation, not on hunting for dry wood. When you book with us, your rental includes:
- A Full Wood Box: We arrive with the wood box loaded to the brim. We include not only the firewood, but also the fire starters and kindling to get the fire started. For most users, this is plenty of fuel for a couple of days of high-heat sessions.
- Note: Fuel consumption depends entirely on how hot you keep the stove and how long you run it. If you’re planning a "sauna marathon" and deplete the provided stock, you will need to supply your own seasoned firewood.
- The "Perfect Fit" Wood Specs: If you do buy extra wood, it must be no longer than 14 inches and no more than 4-5 inches in diameter to fit properly in our stoves.
- The Plunge Experience (April–October): During the warmer months, we include a dedicated cold plunge tank.
- Water Logistics: So we can load and unload the tank by hand, it arrives empty. You will need to have a water source (like a standard garden hose) ready to fill it once we’ve positioned the tank.
- Note: To protect the equipment and your safety, the plunge tank is sidelined during freezing months.
The Logistics of Delivery
We keep our delivery fees straightforward so you can budget accurately:
- The 10-Mile Club: If you are within 10 miles of our Golden Valley, delivery and setup are completely free.
- Twin Cities Area Delivery: For those in the Twin Cities area, we charge $1.50 per mile for both drop-off and pick-up. We calculate this upfront during booking so there are no surprise fees later.
- Greater Minnesota and Wisconsin Delivery: If you’re a bit further out, we offer discounts based on distance and length of rental.
The Paperwork & Flexibility
- The Waiver: Before we strike the first match, we require a standard liability waiver. Currently, we handle this in person during delivery, ensuring everyone is clear on safety, but we are working on an online version to streamline the process.
- Delivery & Pickup: To accommodate back-to-back rentals we typically schedule deliveries at 3 PM or later and pickups by noon. This allows you to use the sauna on the nights that you paid for and gives us time to clean and restock the sauna for the next renter.
- Rescheduling: If extreme weather makes delivery unsafe or a family emergency arises, don't sweat it. While we generally don't offer cash refunds, we are more than happy to reschedule your sauna rental to a future date.
When renting a mobile sauna, have a quick look at your driveway or designated "sauna spot." If there are tight turns, low-hanging power lines, or if your water spigot is unusually far from the setup area, let us know so we can plan the perfect approach!
Phase 2: Preparation – Setting the Stage for Steam
Once your dates are locked in, it’s time to prep your space. A little bit of planning ensures that when we pull into your driveway, you can get the fire started without a hitch.
Scouting the Perfect Spot (Logistics)
Our mobile saunas are heavy, specialized pieces of equipment. To ensure a safe and stable experience, we look for the "Three Ls" when we arrive:
- Level Ground: For your comfort on the benches, the sauna needs to be on a relatively flat surface. Driveways, parking pads, or firm, level turf work best.
- Low-Hanging Obstacles: Remember that these units have chimneys! Please check for low-hanging tree branches, power lines, or building overhangs that might obstruct the trailer or the heat rising from the stack.
- Landscaping Awareness: We want to protect your property. While we can place units on firm grass, please be aware that a 3,000lb trailer can leave an impression on soft or wet turf. We’ll work with you to find the spot that balances a great view with property protection.
Do You Have the Clearance?
To avoid any delivery day "surprises," please ensure your designated spot meets these specific dimensions:
- The Footprint: The sauna unit itself is 8 feet wide by 14 feet long. You'll want to choose a spot that allows for a little extra "buffer" space around the unit for guests to move comfortably.
- Vertical Clearance: Our units are tall! You will need at least 11 feet of vertical headroom to clear the roofline and the chimney stack. Keep an eye out for low-hanging tree branches or power lines.
- Gate Access: If we need to pass through a gate to reach your backyard, the opening must be at least 9 feet wide.
Our "Gold Standard" of Clean (Hygiene)
We know that hygiene is the #1 concern for many first-time sauna renters. We take this seriously so you don’t have to. Here is our commitment to you:
- Professional Sanitization: Between every single rental, our units undergo a multi-step deep clean. We use wood-safe, non-toxic cleaners specifically designed for high-heat environments. We scrub the benches, floors, and touchpoints to ensure the unit arrives in pristine condition.
- The "Towel Rule" Etiquette: To keep the cedar benches beautiful and hygienic for everyone, we ask that all guests sit on a clean towel during their session. This prevents body oils and sweat from soaking into the wood, maintaining that fresh cedar scent.
Water Access
If your sauna rental includes the plunge tank (April–October), ensure your garden hose reaches the setup area. Since the tank arrives empty, having your water source ready means you can start filling as soon as we unhitch.
If you’re interested in turning your plunge tank into an ice bath, be sure to stock up on lots of ice, two or three 20 lb bags is a good place to start!
Phase 3: The Arrival & Orientation – Mastering the Heat
The trailer has backed in and the cedar scent is in the air. But before we leave you to your wellness retreat, we conduct a personalized orientation. We want to ensure you are comfortable with every control and feature when you are renting a mobile sauna from us.
The Setup Process
Our arrival takes about 15–20 minutes. During this time, we:
- Level the Unit: We use jacks to ensure the benches are level and the trailer is rock-solid for your safety.
- Safety First: We’ll point out the location of the fire extinguisher and ensure the chimney is free from overhead obstructions.
Your Personal Orientation
Think of this as your "User Manual" in person. We’ll walk you through the unit to show you:
- Lighting & Ambience: How to use the dimmers to set the perfect mood for a night session.
- The Heart of the Sauna (The Stove): We’ll walk you through the stove’s anatomy including the door, the flue damper, and the ash pan.
- Maintenance During Your Stay: We’ll show you when and how to clear the ash pan into the provided ash can to keep the fire burning efficiently throughout your rental.
- The "Golden Rule" of Airflow: We’ll show you the air vents and how to adjust them. We recommend keeping the vent slightly cracked during your session; this allows fresh air to circulate, keeping the heat "crisp" and comfortable.
Dialing in Your Temperature
While the "perfect" temperature is a matter of personal preference, we’ll show you how to read the thermometer and manage your fuel to reach your goal.
- The Sweet Spot: Many of our regulars (including us!) find that 180°F to 200°F is the "Goldilocks" zone for a deep, detoxifying sweat. However, if you prefer a gentler 160°F or a searing 210°F, we’ll show you how to get there.
The Art of Löyly (Steam)
We’ll provide the water bucket and ladle and, yes, you can throw water onto the rocks. This is the "soul" of the sauna experience, and we’ll make sure you know how to create that perfect wave of humidity.
It typically takes 45 to 90 minutes for the sauna to reach its optimal heat. Use this time to hydrate, set out your towels, and, if it's the right season, start filling that plunge tank!
Phase 4: Enjoying Your Stay – Your Private Oasis
Once the orientation is complete, the sauna is officially yours to enjoy. Whether you are a solo seater or hosting a group, here is how to manage the experience during your rental period.
Managing the Heat Cycle
As you settle into your routine, remember that a wood-fired sauna is a "living" environment:
- Light the Fire: We recommend a hybrid top down fire build. Place a couple larger logs on the fire grate with a small gap between them. Position your kindling on top of that. Light the kindling and, once started, add larger pieces of kindling and smaller pieces of wood until the logs beneath have started. See our YouTube video below for a demo of how we start the fire.
- Feeding the Rhythm: For a consistent temperature, we recommend adding a couple logs every 30–45 minutes rather than over-stuffing the stove.
- The "Towel Rule" Reminder: To maintain our high hygiene standards, please ensure every guest uses a clean towel on the benches. This keeps the cedar pristine and prevents moisture from soaking into the wood.
- Ventilation: If your head starts getting too hot, simply adjust the air vents we showed you during orientation. Keeping them slightly cracked generates convection currents and helps even out the temperature.
The Plunge & Hydration
If you are using the cold plunge tank (available April–October), you have the perfect setup for contrast therapy.
- The Nordic Cycle: Most users find the best results by spending 15 minutes in the heat, followed by a 1–2 minute cold plunge or 10 minute cool down. Then, repeat.
- Stay Hydrated: High-heat sessions lead to significant sweating. We recommend keeping water nearby (outside the sauna room) to rehydrate between rounds.
Mid-Stay Maintenance
If you are renting a mobile sauna for multiples nights, you may need to perform a quick "ash check":
Phase 5: The Hand-Back – A Seamless Finish
We aim to make the pickup process as relaxing as the sauna itself. Here is what to expect when your rental period concludes.
Post-Session Rinse & Care
To help us maintain our gold standard of hygiene, we ask that you perform a quick "rinse-down" after your final session while the sauna is still hot. During your orientation, we will provide a specialized sauna detergent and walk you through the process:
The "Cool-Down" Window
Because we cannot safely tow a trailer with a roaring fire, we have one simple rule for the final day:
- The One-Hour Rule: Please do not stoke the fire or add fresh wood to the stove within one hour of our scheduled pickup time.
- Ash Management: If the stove has cooled and you’d like to tidy up, you are welcome to move the ashes to the provided metal ash can. However, we are more than happy to do this for you. In fact, if the stove is still hot, we prefer to handle the cleaning ourselves to ensure no one gets burned.
Clearing the Plunge Tank (April–October)
If you enjoyed the cold plunge, we ask that you help us prepare it for travel.
- The One-Hour Drain: The plunge tank cannot be loaded onto the trailer while full because it is too heavy. It typically takes one hour to fully drain, so please plan to open the drain valve at least 60 minutes before our scheduled arrival.
The Final Walk-Through
When our driver arrives, they will perform a brief five-minute check. This isn't just about the equipment; it’s about making sure you haven't left anything behind!
- Personal Items: We’ll double-check the benches and changing area for any jewelry, watches, or glasses that might have been tucked away.
- Equipment Check: We’ll ensure our accessories (bucket, ladle, and ash can) are accounted for and that the trailer is ready for the road.
We hear that ashes are great in compost. Feel free to spread your ashes over your compost, just ensure the embers are completely extinguished and cold to the touch before spreading them.
